An offshoot of my business, Zoë Designs Ltd, happened a few years ago. I branched out into millinery, or, hat making.
I sold my bags in a local store called Goldie’s which carried, among other items, vintage and resale, clothes and jewelry. The owner Jan, and I, kept talking about hats, which prompted me to do some research and I found it fascinating.
Our town, Lafayette, was founded by an amazing woman named Mary Miller over 100 years ago. She was the only woman banker in the country at the time. Someone suggested to me that the town needed a hat shop called “The Merry Milliner”, since it was the perfect play on our esteemed founder’s name. Well, that did it. I registered the name in days and started making hats, which I sold, only at Goldie’s, under that name.
Goldie’s has since closed and I am pleased to add my hats to my on line offerings.
Each hat is individually made using a variety of materials. Some will be made with new hat bases, some repurposed, and some will be restyled vintage. The trims will also vary between new, vintage and repurposed. Any feathers I may use are naturally molted from pet birds. The “ingredients” of each hat will be clearly described in each listing.
